‘Barn Find’

A comment on our ‘WhatsAp’ page prompted the title for this months article and while there must be many such ‘finds’ out there, I’ve only come across two. The first one I found on ‘Adverts.ie’ and I purchased a magnificent ‘Messerschmitt 109’, a Durably scale model, never flown and in great condition, RTF.

The second event occurred just days ago when a chap I have known for many years pulled up to my driveway, open his van and produced this amazing ‘Red Baron’, Fokker DR1. Apparently he acquired it over fifteen years ago with the full intent of flying it but there it lay, in his shed for that time and recently when he saw me flying near my holiday home, he decided I might give the aircraft a better chance of ever flying again. Hence I am now, for good or for worse, the owner of this magnificent aircraft.

As I am an ‘electric’ junky, this will be a real challenge, not to mention the additional flying skills required to manage this beauty in the air but that’s a distance away yet. A full assessment of the materials & equipment required to make it flight worthy will need to be made and to that end I will have many hands within the Club to assist me. so I’m making this my next project with a goal to have a maiden flight early 2024, with the help of both my good friend at ‘FlyCVA’ (where I first learned to fly RC) and who also owns a DR1, but also the experts at Royal County who are far more experienced than I with Bi-planes & Tail Waggers!

So if you have a good ‘barn story’ to tell, email me your story and pics for publishing, or indeed if you are on a project of interest to those who read our website, let me have your story!
